The growth in population and ownership of automobiles in India has led to a number of problems, including increased levels of traffic congestion and air pollution, as well as rising CO2 emissions. Although urban transportation is a crucial factor in the country’s overall economic expansion, it is also one of the primary causes of the current climate catastrophe and a number of other problems that plague metropolitan regions of India. This deficit is mostly attributed to the absence of monitoring, the complexity of institutional capacity and urban administration, the chaotic land zoning, and the inadequate overall development and transportation plans. Therefore, the promotion and adoption of environmentally friendly modes of transportation in metropolitan areas is unquestionably one of the most efficient ways to address these challenges. In India, like in other countries throughout the world, governments are making increased investments in environmentally friendly transportation by implementing a variety of transformative approaches. In spite of the growing inefficiencies that are involved within the transportation, these approaches towards environmentally responsible urban transportation remain quite traditional. As a result, the concerns and challenges that India is facing in the process of establishing sustainable urban transportation are highlighted in this chapter. Further, the problems and difficulties inherent in the procedures that are now in use are investigated, and suggestions for policy adjustments are offered. The adoptions such as readjusting the regulatory framework, transforming institutions, and effectively planning and allocating resources have the potential to build sustainable urban transportation in India.
