Design and implementation of advanced public transportation system for developing countries

The public transportation buses provide dense connectivity for the majority of the stretches of the road network. Advanced Public Transportation System (APTS) provides computer and electronics technology based solutions to increase the reliability and efficiency of the transportation system. In this paper, the APTS solutions for automatic bus-stop detection, arrival time prediction, bus crowdedness detection, bus scheduling, road condition monitoring, and road infrastructure detection are presented. The solutions consider the scenarios of the developing countries with a focus on large scale deployment. The scalability is achieved by executing the minimal computation in real time and the other computations in an offline mode. The proposal is expected to improve commuters’ experience and aid transportation agencies, road monitoring programs, and navigation applications that use road infrastructure information.
