As a result of the numerous financial and ecological benefits they offer, electric cars (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have garnered a great deal of attention in the modern world. It is to be expected that a sizeable portion of the gasoline that is consumed in the transportation industry will be put toward powering machinery. This large consumption of oil leads to a range of unfavourable outcomes, including shifts in the economic landscape, changes in the climate, and the degradation of the natural environment. To reduce the dependency of fossil fuel and environment, various research and development has been done on EVs and HEVs. More precisely, the batteries have been a primary focus for the past few years. A battery is an essential component of an electric or hybrid electric vehicle. Utilizing an efficient battery thermal management system will ensure maximum performance and reliability in maintaining the ideal temperature of the battery. For this reason, phase-change materials (PCM) have shown a lot of interest in the recent development of thermal management systems for batteries. This study provides an overview of the recent efforts in the development of PCM-based thermal management systems and the future prospects of PCM-based batteries in terms of material and technology availability.
