Dry sliding wear mechanisms and of closed-cell Mg-2Zn-2Ca foam fabricated by stir-casting were investigated using pin-on-disc tribometer. Wear tests were conducted in wide range of varying load of 5–100 N and sliding velocities of 2,3 and 4 m/s at constant sliding distance of 1000 m to develop wear and heat flux mapping plots. Transition of mild to severe wear by establishing different wear mechanisms, its comparative study with solid alloy and microstructure characterization were carried out for potential sustainability of Mg-alloy foam in automotive and biomedical applications. Wear rate was reduced while increasing the effects of work hardening and decreasing the effects of thermal softening occurred during frictional heat flux generation due to competition between work hardening and thermal softening. The results were concluded that Mg-2Zn-2Ca foam exhibited good wear resistance at load up to 25 N, sliding velocity up to 2 m/s and recommended for low load bearing light-weight tribological applications.
