Soil Mechanics is a major and fundamental component of Geotechnical Engineering. Geotechnical Engineering is that sub-specialisation of Civil Engineering concerned with the engineering behavior of earth materials including soils, rocks and various composite materials. It has applications in military, mining, petroleum and other engineering disciplines that are concerned with construction occurring on the surface or within the ground.
The purpose of Soil Mechanics laboratory is to determine physical, mechanical, and hydraulic properties of earthen materials which further help to predict field behavior, designing earthworks and foundation systems, evaluate stability of natural and manmade soil deposits, assess risk posed by site conditions and for forensic investigations. The soil Mechanics Laboratory at IITRAM is well equipped with state-of-the-art instruments/equipment to ensure all tests on soils as well as allied fields.
