Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, have transformed industries through rapid proliferation. This review explores recent trends in drone communication, shedding light on emerging technologies shaping the landscape. Drone communication protocols, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LoRAWAN, LTE, and 5G, are discussed. Beyond-Visual-Line-of-Sight (BVLOS) communication's importance is highlighted, and satellite communication's role in long-distance drone missions is explored. The integration of edge computing and IoT enhances real-time data processing, while 5G technology promises lower latency and higher bandwidth, revolutionizing drone communication. Security and privacy challenges, linked to sensitive data collected during drone operations, are addressed. The paper looks to the future, discussing trends and emerging technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence, providing practical case studies. In conclusion, the paper outlines the challenges and future directions in drone communication, emphasizing the need for continuous research and innovation in this dynamic field. It serves as a valuable resource for professionals seeking to understand the latest developments in drone communication, enabling them to harness the full potential of this transformative technology.
