  • Topic of the research: Design and Optimization of Gas Cooler for Performance Enhancement of Trans-critical CO2 Refrigeration System in Indian Context

    Place of Research Work and Organization - BITS Pilani, India Supervisor - Dr. M. S. Dasgupta ( Professor, Mechanical Engineering Department, BITS, Pilani, India) Brief Description of the Work The main objectives of the work is modeling and simulation of heat transfer in gas cooler for exploration of trans-critical CO2 based refrigeration system, model validation and parameter optimization for enhanced heat transfer to explore the usefulness in high ambiance temperature application (typical Indian atmosphere) and finally to formulation of design guidelines for optimized performance of gas coolers in CO2 based trans-critical refrigeration systems. In this work, the most sensitive component (gas cooler) was selected for the study, and through modeling and simulation, the performance of gas cooler and the system using the respective gas coolers were analyzed. A mathematical model and MATLAB® were developed, and validated from the published experimental results. Further, an attempt was made to optimize the gas cooler based on the geometric and operating parameters. The major findings of the work depict that, there are unique combinations of design and operating conditions for each temperature zones, for gas cooler, compressor and turbine, which leads to achieve the best possible COP of the system in Indian condition.   • Title: Experimental Investigation on CO2 Based Refrigeration System in Trans-critical Cycle.

    Funding Agency: DST (under Technology System Development Program 2013) Role: CO-PI Total Amount: 27.5 Lakh Brief description of the project: The main objectives of the project are to explore the usability of trans-critical refrigeration cycle using CO2 as refrigerant in the Indian context (warm conditions), experimental investigation and addressing technical challenges in the system, finally, to recommend suitable design modification of the system for performance enhancement. Further, to study the effect of various operating parameters for finding the optimum combinations to achieve the best possible COP. This work will help to formulate a guideline for the designers to design the component of system with optimum operating conditions. Current Status: Ongoing
